Wal-Mart will discount apples in October
BENTONVILLE, Ark. Wal-Mart Stores Inc., the world's largest retailer, said Friday it will offer discounts on apples and apple products on four days in October and promote locally grown apples.
On Friday, Sunday, and Oct. 10-11, Wal-Mart will offer shoppers samples of apples and apple products. Produce from local farmers will also be featured in stores. One-pound bags of Honeycrisp, Gold Delicious, Fuji, Jonagold and Cortland apples will be sold for $1 to $1.98 per pound. Also, 3 lb. bags of apple varieties including Gala, Red Delicious and Granny Smith will be sold for $2.50 to $2.77. Prices will vary by state and are available while supplies last. Wal-Mart also said it is introducing a new line of Paula Deen Baked Goods, including an Apple Crunch Top Pie. The items will retail for between $3 to $7.50. http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20091002/..._stores_apples This is a great price. Honeycrisp, a Minnesota native, is usually much higher priced! I plan to stock up. |

Whats the deal with apples? Any particular reason they chose those?

Re: Wal-Mart will discount apples in October
No, but I'd guess it's their loss-leader to get people into the store. Where, there just might be early Christmas stuff to entice your dollars from your wallet?
Other than that, it IS apple harvesting season. And hopefully they're promoting USA apples. |
Re: Wal-Mart will discount apples in October
OK, here's a practical question. I don't have one of those apple cider presses. But every second or third year we end up with lots of apples. We have cut them up and frozen them before. But there has to be a way to make apple cider that doesn't involve some big expensive piece of machinery!

By-pass Chinamart all together. Last weekend we went right to the source for farm fresh apples. The Orchard! We have one about 5 mikes from here. About 3 bushels (over 100lbs) for about .25 cent per. Been processing apple sauce all week lol

Re: Wal-Mart will discount apples in October
I'll have to check, but I remember our last visit the apples, 'pick your own' were actually MORE than retail. Go figure. Maybe it's changed this year, but I still will partake of the Wal-Mart sale.

How about they start with removing all the GMO food; high fructose corn syrup, MSG & all it's deriveritives. Oh that's right, they're money makers on both ends of the scheme. Pay to put in into food, pay when our health suffers & need medical help.
Nope, won't happen. |
Re: Wal-Mart will discount apples in October
Went to an old homestead on state land 3 miles away last week and picked about 15 pounds of Wolf Rivers, 8-12 ounce fruit. A little wormy but free and tasty, nice for apple sauce. Can get more there but will travel north to some other old homesteads on state or federal land a see if I can find some nicer apples and maybe some pears.

Re: Wal-Mart will discount apples in October
I just stocked up on Spartans for $0.56/lb, $2.50 seems like a lot. IMO nothing better than a Spartan.

Re: Wal-Mart will discount apples in October
Here in Michigan apples are very cheap from farmers markets and local orchards, or free from many landowners who simply dont want to clean up after their trees. same with pears.

Re: Wal-Mart will discount apples in October
I really like pears, when I get good ones I can them in brandy, makes a great Christmas gift.

Re: Wal-Mart will discount apples in October
Meh, we're going to pick locally grown apples and pumpkins today from our favorite grower. It's an annual event. We usually come home with about 50 lbs. of a mixed variety of apples, at WAY less than $1/lb. I look forward to this all year!
